Railroad Power Monitoring
Reliable and Efficient Remote Railroad Traffic & Environmental Control
Korenix JetNet series gigabit managed switches have been integrated in a railway automation project, aiming to provide reliable, real-time traffic control and environment monitoring throughout the railway stations. Using their high-port density design, SFP gigabit combo ports and the MultiRing technology, the JetNet 5428G and JetNet 5018G switches were able to form multiple redundant MSR rings while extending the reliable data transmission through gigabit fiber ports. With the wide operating temperature, rugged design and high quality data and video stream transmission, the switches guaranteed real-time monitoring and control of railway stations under harshest conditions.

The rapid expansion of the railway networks and the technological developments have conducted to a rising demand of intelligent network system constructions alongside railroad systems. To monitor the traffic as well as the environment situation in railroads, lots of traffic controlling, video recording and weather detecting stationeries are installed on the railroads, which are being subjected to severe environmental conditions: high and low temperature extremes, vibration, humidity, etc. To accommodate the specific needs of the railroad industry, industrial-grade Ethernet backbone switches are a must.
Korenix JetNet switches have been implemented in the railway automation project to provide reliable traffic control and environmental monitoring in a real-time basis.
In each railway station and alongside railroads, traffic controlling equipments are used along with the humidity, temperature monitoring devices and video cameras. To collect all these information and send for analyzing to the control room, Korenix JetNet 5018G managed Ethernet switches, which are designed with 16 Fast Ethernet and 2 Gigabit SFP combo ports, have been used. By implementing the SFP ports of the switch the system administrators were able to provide reliable gigabit fiber connectivity to the data metering devices and cameras in places where a long distance had to be covered. In the control room all the information was then collected in JetNet 5428G gigabit managed switch through the gigabit copper and SFP combo ports.
By implementing the MSR technology the switches were capable of reliably sending all the information throughout the redundant ring which possesses only 5ms recovery time. Besides, as the JetNet 5428G series provide the MultiRing technology, they allowed users to form multiple gigabit copper or fiber rings in a single switch to collect all the data and then form another giga ring with other railway station control rooms to transfer the data to the railway traffic control center.

Administrators further benefitted from the advanced management functionalities of the switches to discover devices through LLDP, remotely manage them via JetView Pro and SNMP, as well as provide secure and high quality data transmission with the QoS, VLAN, ACL and many other outstanding management and security features.
Korenix switches with fanless design and -25~70oC wide operating temperature provided reliable and high quality data and video stream transmission assuring the real-time monitoring of railway stations.
