New IP DSCP Remarking is now launched in JetNet 5012G Industrial 8+4G Gigabit Managed Switch for enhanced QoS prioritization in factory and traffic control systems!

Korenix releases the new IP DSCP Remarking function in its 8+4G port Managed Gigabit switch’s v1.3a firmware to be highly compatible in Factory and Traffic Control networks, VoIP applications, etc, by providing users with advanced QoS prioritization and traffic identification.

The new feature allows the switch to use the advanced QoS to prioritize traffic forwarding levels in industrial networks. Compared to the earlier QoS prioritization available in the switch’s firmware, the IP DSCP Remarking allows users to reassign IP DSCP values and classify traffic in the network based on these values. As a result, it guarantees the QoS policy and can be controlled by the administrator.

Korenix JetNet 5012G is an industrial Layer 2+ managed Ethernet switch with an exclusive design: in addition to the 8 Fast Ethernet ports it provides 2 Gigabit SFP and 2 Gigabit SFP combo ports for high-port connectivity and flexible extended uplink data transmission.
The 4 Gigabit ports design on JetNet 5012G is more convenient and widely required than 3 gigabit ports design as it ensures higher throughput within one switch box. JetNet 5012G supports Korenix patented MSR network redundancy and MultiRing technologies for connecting and forming dual gigabit rings and 4 100M rings. Korenix integrates a new function, the Multiple Event Relay in its JetNet 4508 V2 series 8-port Managed Fast Ethernet Fiber / Copper Switches aiming to enhance the device control and optimize networks in heavy industrial applications.

Unlike the single event supported in the previous firmware version of the switches, with the new multiple event relay function users can now get alarms if multiple events occur, including power or port link changes, DI/Ring status changes, etc…..  This, as a result, enables users to get better control of the switches by fast reacting to the situation changes for their future elimination.

 

Korenix JetNet 4508 V2 series are field-level switches designed with outstanding management, control and security features and EN 50121-4, IEC 61373 Railway EMC as well as IEC 61000-6-2/ 61000-6-4 heavy industrial certified design to ensure reliable data transfer when used in harsh environmental applications.

Korenix offers two models, the JetNet 4508 V2 designed with 8 Fast Ethernet RJ45 ports and JetNet 4508f V2 with 6 Fast Ethernet plus 2 Fiber ports for up to 30KM distance uplink connection. Guaranteeing Advanced Data Prioritization and Control through the IP DSCP Remarking of JetNet 5012G IP Surveillance 8+4G Giga Managed Switch!

When building network infrastructures today, it is essential to assure that the critical applications are guaranteed to get the network resources and data they need, despite varying network traffic load.

Quality of Service (QoS) Overview
Therefore, in industrial communication networks the Quality of Service is a highly important feature that should be provided in the equipment for giving different priorities to different packets generated from the application and users. For example, the control packet that is generated by the SCADA system in substation or factory automation environment is critical and must be forwarded by first priority.

Most industrial switches support QoS, for providing better communication performance through the prioritization. QoS has a simple operation mechanism: it ensures that the traffic takes precedence over non-controllable traffic, such as web surfing or file transfer. To prioritize traffic, managed switches use QoS tags in the packet header.

2 QoS Types are available; QoS can be marked in either the Layer 2 or the Layer 3 IP headers:

For the Layer 2 header, it is referred as the Class of Service (CoS) bits, where 3 bits are used to identify 8 levels of service. The bits are carried in the 802.1Q Tag along with the VLAN ID.

For Layer 3, it is called the Differentiated Services Code Point (DSCP) value, where 6 bits are used to identify 64 levels of service. The bits are carried in the IP packets for packet classification purposes.

A Managed switch usually supports 4 physical queues. The below Figure 3 shows the JetNet Switch’s Queue Mapping, which highlights how the above 2 QoS types are prioritized:

IP DSCP Remarking in JetNet 5012G managed switch

Normally, the DSCP value supported in the Layer 2 managed switch can only be mapped to the QoS table which is only for IP packet prioritizing. The JetNet 5012G is a layer 2+ switch which, in addition to IP packet prioritizing, can identify IP header and support IP DSCP Remarking. Marking a packet with an IP DSCP Remarking allows the switch to give new DSCP value in the IP header of the incoming packets through the switch. The administrator can then classify traffic based on an IP DSCP value and redefine the value for the outgoing traffic. With this function, it becomes flexible to adjust the QoS policy and prioritize the traffic forwarding levels in industrial network environments.

Steps:
1. Create QoS Policy Map

Advantage of IP DSCP Remarking

Once the IP packet is marked with DSCP value, the switch will follow the queue mapping configured by the switch’s UI in order to forward traffic. However, if the user assigned the value by itself with highest priority without administrator’s agreement, or if one of the switches is assigned with different DSCP value, the forwarding policy may be affected. This is not allowed by the system administrator and is risky while transmitting the critically important packets.

With the IP DSCP Remarking feature, the administrator can re-assign new DSCP value to the outgoing packets. Even the value of the packet, which is brought out by highest priority, can be changed to lowest, and the lowest priority value can be changed to highest. The IP DSCP Remarking feature can guarantee the QoS policy, and can be controlled well by the administrator.

To support the IP DSCP Remaking feature, it is required to have Layer 2+ chipset and software.
